This is Mr. Bingle. Or at least a likeness of him made of felt and white yarn and sequin beads. For those who like me, grew up in New Orleans, nothing more needs to be said by way of introduction. But for the uninitiated, Mr. Bingle was a stringed puppet-figure who made his annual Christmas shopping appearance in New Orleans on behalf of the then local department store giant Maison Blanche. He was made of white snowballs and had green holly wings, a pointy ice cream cone cap. And had a bright red cherry nose. Bingle's mission was to help Santa Claus get the kids ready for Christmas. And that included helping with suggestions for shopping at MB. He had his own musical jingle, television program, and was wildly popular among New Orleans children and families in the 1950s-1960s.
