The way into the often beautiful grounds of the various Buddhist and Shinto temples and shrines, as well as many of the magnificent palaces of Japan, is often marked by a large and impressive gate - as is the case here at a Kyoto Buddhist holy place.

Many people pass through these gates - the faithful and the tourists alike. None can be unimpressed.
