It's Sunday, Y'all!
One of these butterflies fluttered into my back yard garden recently, and settled on our passion flower vine. I got excited, because I'd never seen one like it before.
Unfortunately, all I had at the time was my iPhone camera and the lighting wasn't great, so the pics were grainy. Plus, at the time I didn't know what kind of butterfly this was.
But even a grainy picture can be a help. By checking it against available references, I learned to my surprise and delight that this is a "Zebra Longwing" butterfly. And it is the (drum roll)... state butterfly of Florida. And one of their favorite hangouts is the passionflower vine, just like the kind I've got growing on my back fence. This is where they like to lay their eggs and start off in life.
So next time one of these little beauties showed up for a visit, I made it a point to have my "real" camera (Nicky) handy, and that has paid off. Here's a zebra longwing, perched delicately on a passionflower vine tendril. The white background is my back fence.
Surprises come in all shapes, sizes and forms. God is good!
Soli Deo Gloria!
