“When despair for the world grows in me, and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be -- I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought or grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.” (Wendell Berry)

An intersesting place, the shot looks a little blown out or is it sun flare !

27 Apr 2012 10:16am

@Anthony Morgan Lambert: It may be a bit of both, plus the fact that my lens needed cleaning. But the strong sunbeams that break through the dark Everglades tree canopy do create strong contrasty lighting - which can be quite challenging to those of us with limited photo - technical skills. Thanks for commenting.

What a lush and pungent scene of life. I wondered at the misty or sunny spot but liked it, as I care not much for tecky perfection. To me it just lays there a possible spirit thing, or unique spotlight on that lovely white crane!

@Joyce: Thanks, am glad you like the white bird (it's a heron). "Lush and pungent" really does describe this particular environment. Well-said!

...what is the title meaning? I sure love that quote!!!!

27 Apr 2012 2:50pm

@Joyce: Generally speaking, it means: "a state of national tranquillity, exemption from the rage and havoc of war; peace between individuals, i.e. harmony, concord; security, safety, prosperity, felicity, (because peace and harmony make and keep things safe and prosperous)..." For Christians, there is a theological facet to this as well. It's all on that link I embedded in today's text.
