A Tribute to My Friend: Monterey John

Posted by
Viewfinder (Bradenton, FL, United States) on 29 June 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

John A. Wilson has died. He's a guy I met a few years ago here on Am3, but in that time he became an important friend, photo-mentor and all around internet buddy. I'm gonna miss you, John.

So John, I decided to interrupt my New Orleans series today to post one of my favorites of your many outstanding, excellent, amazing photographs. Naturally, it's a shot you took at Pfeiffer Beach at Big Sur. It was not easy to pick only one favorite, but I decided this is the one. I think it's because you clued me in to this place when we visited San Francisco and the coast a couple of years ago. I knew you wouldn't steer me wrong - and you didn't. Having been there, I now know why it's one of your most favorite places on this earth. It has become one of mine.

This picture is yours, John. And this post is a tribute to you and the many lives you've touched along the way. One of those is our mutual friend Judy. Here's her special way of remembering...

Godspeed, good friend. Until we meet again.

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

lovely tribute.

@Ted: My privilege to present it.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

how beautiful.Love the golden rays reaching beyond the dark clouds, we'll see you at the other side one day. Thank you for posting this Uncle Glenn:)

29 Jun 2011 11:21am

@tyan: Thank you, niece tyan.

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

A wonderful tribute to a talented and vibrant member of our AM3 family! Well done Glenn! ;-)

29 Jun 2011 11:39am

@Eric Cousineau: John's presence enriched us all. I learned a lot from him photographically and processing-wise. But I enjoyed him as John the person, most of all.

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

When I saw the thumbnail my heart skipped a beat ...
What a beautiful tribute, Glenn ... there could be none better. John would be (is) thrilled that you borrowed this awesome image. He and the angels are applauding your efforts!

29 Jun 2011 11:40am

@Judy aka L@dybug: I hope he doesn't mind - I've tried to make it clear it is his, not mine.

Tede from Aubenas 07, France

An array extraordinary, sublime shot. 5 *. Good day.

@Tede: John Wilson was a great photographer and a wonderful friend; this is his photo. I have borrowed it in tribute to his life.

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

Oh, so sad . I deeply hoped John would recover and come back to us with his gorgeous landscapes and always friendly comments .
May he rest in peace !!!
This is wonderful tribute and I personally thank you very much !

29 Jun 2011 12:53pm

@MARIANA: You are welcome. John was one special guy.

Amanda from Jersey City, United States

Beautiful and sincere tribute. I love that one of his favorite locations has now become one of yours...parts of us live on in others forever.

29 Jun 2011 12:57pm

@Amanda: Truly. If it hadn't been for John, I would never have known this particular place. He was a master of its many moods, and his many photographs have collected quite a few of them. His legacy and his gift to us, I suppose.

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

ps. I just sent an email to support of Am3 with this context :
Hi there .

I just learn that our dear friend John Wilson died .

Viewfinder posted John's picture on his page in tribute to our friend .

http://lookcloser.aminus3.com/image/2011-06-29.html

My the warmest suggestion would be to post this image on a SPOTLIGHT .

That would be our thanks to John !

Please do it !

Thanks in advance !

Regards,

Mariana

for a moment there you got M.E. I miss MontereyJohn, too. You're blessed to have met him.

29 Jun 2011 1:22pm

@Photographs by M.E.: John was actually not around when I was there two years ago; but for years before and since, we communicated many times via the internet in emails and here on Am3. He was every bit as much of a friend as if we were next-door neighbors.

This is sad news. I "knew" John through photoblogging first through Blogger then through Am3. I met John in New York last Fall at the photo-plus expo and I only regret that the meeting was so short as he went back to California shortly after. He will be missed.

This is a beautiful way to honor John's memory.
