The Feb. 21 eclipse as seen by the VF camera in my backyard, and before the clouds rolled in and eclipsed the eclipse. Bummer! This was my first stab at taking a detailed moon shot. I am not totally pleased with the clarity and sharpness of the lunar landscape, but... c'est la vie.

I think it is a great shot and I like how you framed it ... well done

@Man With 101 Names: Thanks 101. You're helping me feel better about the lack of sharpness.

Dylan from Delhi, United States

I too like the framing...

Beautiful! I like the framing a lot.

@Craiger: Craiger, you and Jen have set the standard on moon shots (as far as the ones I've seen here). So I appreciate your word of affirmation very much.

MaryB from Staffordshire, United Kingdom

You did a great job VF, not the easiest subject to capture, great framing too.

It's beautiful Vf

You were not the only one trying out for the moon that day! I discovered the limitations of my point & shoot camera (Canon PowerShot S3 IS) and the fact that winter air has lots of ice crystals.....

wow, this is fantastic shot, either you have a very good backyard with a to-die-for-view or a real good cam or real good photgraphy skills! All the above perhaps!:):)

3 Mar 2008 3:03pm

@tyan: Ha-ha. Thanks tyan; you are very kind. Our back yard is ok; can see the moon in the east. But my cam is just a simple Nikon D80, with 70-300 zoom. I cropped this image to get us closer to it.

kairospix from Singapore, Singapore

cool capture!
was that 450mm with a 300mm lens? or did you have ome of those huge telephoto prome lens?!
maybe it was the ledendary 70-300mm VR f4.5-5.6 zoom? :)

3 Mar 2008 3:41pm

@kairospix: Yes you are correct; it is that legendary lens I used, one and the same. ;-)

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

Beautiful. One of the best I've seen.

Man will walk on that again... Cool shot! :)

Chris from South Jersey, United States

It is a nice shot, although I see what you mean about the clarity. But you tried - I didn't even get out the camera to try.....

3 Mar 2008 6:54pm

@Chris: What an encourager you are Chris. Thanks.

Rebecca from Leicester, United Kingdom

Yep, again I have to agree with Chris. This eclipse shot definitely beats the many of us who didn't even manage to catch any at all, sir! And this capture is fabulous and marvellous in its own right. I don't actually mind the level of sharpness. The slight softness gives it a lovely floating effect most apt for the moon, i feel. You have definitely done the eclipse justice, imho.

3 Mar 2008 9:06pm

@Rebecca: I appreciate your very kind assessment of this shot. I hadn't thought of it as a soft, floating glimpse of the moon. Gets my mind off its technical shortcomings. Thank you Rebecca.

standley from Brou-sur-Chantereine, France

Excellent capture. Great framing!

Not perfect, perhaps - but I'll tell ya, it's far better than ANY of my attempts. Well done!

VF this is a superb moon shot!!!
Great light, great focus...hard subject to capture (don't I know it hee hee)

Ken McCoy from Orlando-Daytona Beach, FL, United States

Excellent moon shot, esp. with a mundane lens. I had a "moon shot" phase in the old Tri-X film days - I used a spotting telescope, and even then the details were hard to catch just right. I think yours is great!

It is truly GRAND! Excellent VF!!!

Lucca from Cologne, Germany

I like it , though it could be slightly sharper. The framing is really great.

You're just going to have to learn to control the weather, or at least the clouds, next time eh?
