Gingerbread

Posted by
Viewfinder (Bradenton, FL, United States) on 18 September 2007 in Architecture and Portfolio.

On a post-Katrina mission trip to Pascagoula, MS this millwork, called "gingerbread" was found just lying around with nothing in particular to do.

Oh, and for those who can "just see this in BW," I do have done a nice BW version. But in comparing the two, I am convinced color is better here. IMO, the rich tones of the wood porch surface underneath the weathered white of the old millwork does show this image off to its best advantage.

A big thank you to all who have or will stop by and look or leave a comment or a suggestion, or just say "hey!" Even if I don't get to respond to your comment here, I'll try to get to your site today. I appreciate each and every one of you so much!

I really like the image. I can definitely see it in BW, but I agree with you in how the wood and the millwork contrast each other.

@e.: Thanks much, e. Your comment and agreement is appreciated.

@Lorraine: Thank you Lorraine; you're a pal!

jen from Alpharetta, United States

Beautiful tones in the wood and I agree the color is better, in B&W you might lose that.

@jen: Glad you agree Jen. And your photo today is quite nice. It's fun to know something of what our Am3 friends look like.

Rebel Szczesny from Big Apple - NYC, United States

Interesting approach with photoJournalism. Good one VF.
Katrina (Rebel) thoughts. (moderation thing again)

@Rebel Szczesny: Thank you RS; your comments are always a big part of my Am3 day. Hope yours is going well. Blessings.

Nick Passantino from Bronx, United States

i think i would agree with your decision to keep it in color because of the lbrowns of the table and leaves. nice shot

18 Sep 2007 3:34pm

@Nick Passantino: I appreciate your agreement on this one Nick. Thanks.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

Awesome!

18 Sep 2007 5:01pm

@HorseRotorVator: Wow, that's pretty high praise for some humble millwork. Thanks!

Walt from Scarborough, Canada

I agree - the colour adds a very nice touch - warmth that I think would be missing from b&w

18 Sep 2007 5:11pm

@Walt: Thank you Walt; your agreement is encouraging.

Mandy from South Africa

Hey VF~ awesome shot I love the weathering on the millwork and the tones of the wood beneath it really make it that much more noticeable...I agree with you keeping it colour I think you would've lost a lot of the subtle texture by making it b&w.

BTW thanks so much for your encouraging comments over at my blog! Can I assume then that you are a minister now? :)

18 Sep 2007 5:13pm

@Mandy: Thanks, Mandy. I appreciate your comments today. And as for your question, yes.

Rob B from Here and There, United States

Nice View of your FIND there VF

18 Sep 2007 5:25pm

@Rob B: You punster, you! Thanks for the nice observation my friend.

Rabbit from Richmond, United States

mmmm - the title makes me want some cookies or a good gingerbread drink ;) YUM! The brown tones of the wood floor underneith are a nice touch and i think your correct that a B/W photo would not show that off as much.

18 Sep 2007 5:26pm

@Rabbit: Thanks Rabbit, you're always a welcome visitor here. Wish I could give you one of those cookies and some milk or some gingerbread tea or something. Hope you can make a mug or set to go along.

Lost Valley Views from Canada

I like this one and reminds of my family history and the times I would spend with my grandparents cottage. I love it and I like the way you have kept it!!!

18 Sep 2007 7:06pm

@Lost Valley Views: Glad you like LVV. What has happened to your blog? Can't get there from here. I miss your shots.

Rebecca from Leicester, United Kingdom

Like LV, certainly looks to me too like this has quite a story behind it, and the colour contrast between the weathered white and the lovely wood brown certainly brings that out all the more!! A very thoughtful capture, VF. :) Much blessings always to you and yours.
And I must echo Mandy’s sentiments in response to your answer to her question : Truly awesome, man!!

18 Sep 2007 7:47pm

@Rebecca: Thank you Rebecca. I am happy you find this photo attractive. As for my vocation, the "M" word isn't always a welcome thing in all circles of people. Too many stereotypes and bad experiences. Still, I'm glad you and Mandy approve.

bronzebilly u.k. from Barry,Vale of Glamorgan, United Kingdom

hey VF--Welsh buddy's about!!--the general consensus seems to favour the colour shot--and I must agree--it's the correct genre for this excellent image--great shadowing also--I salute your vocation sir--I had a feeling you know*-))--billy

18 Sep 2007 10:49pm

@bronzebilly u.k.: Wow, thank you Billy, am pleased to know you approve! And so we press onward, to greater and greater heights (and photos, too)... Blessings.

alex from United States

great image..

18 Sep 2007 10:55pm

@alex: Most kind; thank you alex.

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

I do love the worn wood and the tones. It's kind of sad though.

19 Sep 2007 1:49am

@Laurie: It is hard to describe the feeling I have -- the upper Gulf Coast is the region where I was born. To see New Orleans, and the LA/MS Gulf Coast in ruins still today is truly a sad prospect. Yet the undefeated spirit of so many of the people in the face of this terrible adversity is an inspiration. This old millwork serves as a reminder of what was, but will likely be incorporated into what will yet be. Even moreso, the people. So sadness, yes. But no despair!
