As for "Panhandle" -- the state of Florida is shaped in a rough way like the outline of a pan (or cooking pot -- if you can picture the state of Oklahoma, that's a clearer outline of what I mean). Anyway, back to Florida, the peninsula that dips down into the Gulf on one side, the Atlantic on the other is the pot/pan part of the outline. The northern Florida Gulf coast would be roughly shaped like the handle on this imaginary pan/pot... thus the term "panhandle" for that north and westernmost geographic part of Florida. It's an Americanism that may or may not make sense outside of the States -- but far as I know, Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas are the three states to which the term is typically applied.
